Iedereen Tegen Kanker 2018

In an online effort to mobilize our viewers into contributing to the "Kom op tegen kanker" charity, the één digital team produced 4 fundraising multicam livestreams, exclusively on facebook live.
In each of the 4 episodes one or more "bekende Vlamingen" underwent a challenge, that had to come to a climax during the show as soon as enough viewers had SMS-ed to a central phone number (which resulted in them wiring 1€ per sent SMS).
In the first episode three famous actors were stuck in the Dalton Terror, a 100 meter high fun ride that took them 5 meters higher per 100€, only to release them once the 2000€ mark had been reached. Other episodes contained nude painting, paintballing and running down the 90 meter high VRT Broadcasting tower.
For each of these events, that made use of 5 to 7 camera's, a very compact setup centered around vMix was used, and operated by a very small crew. (1 chief engineer, 1 video-operator, 1 audio-operator).
vMix was running on a heavy gaming laptop in this case, connected to a PoE+ switch, over NDI. 4 Panasonic 130 Pan Tilt Zoom cams were connected over NDI-Hx, 3 more conventional SDI based camera's (eg. 2 small Marshall cams, but also a GV LDK 8000 cam) connected to vMix over NDI (thanks to the Bird-dog boxes).
Playout of video clips, cutting between sources, recording of the PGM and the ISO's, and even replay (in the Dalton Terror episode), all was done by this same laptop.
On-air graphics played a big role in these events, as the team had to show on-screen in real time the increments in the amount of money raised. This came fully out of the same vMix laptop, but the controls of the graphics were done via a UI-webpage that could be accessed by another tablet or laptop running on the same network.
Audio (mostly wireless) was mixed on Yamaha mixing desks and for the bigger part being kept separate and embedded with the video at the end.
To contribute and stream, the team used a LiveU 600 box that fed the signal back to VRT MCR, where it was put "on the internet".
Unlike some of the other experiments and broadcasts we love to help out with, this effort also took care of the marketing side of things, which resulted in typically 5000 live viewers on Facebook Live, and 150000 vod views in less then a week.

as soon as the production becomes a little bigger and "outside broadcast", u have to package your solutions. During these events we had the central laptop, but in the end we still had too much little boxes and converters dangling from the side of it, resulting in a forest of devices.
1080i50 projects and hdmi output don't mix well. If you work in HDMI, please stay in progressive formats. Or buy an SDI card that can generate 1080i50.
HDMI cables can fall out of the HDMI port on the laptop, resulting in Off-Air. Another argument for going SDI or IP.
when you start with NDI (video over IP), you need IP/IT knowledge. For this the staff needs to be trained properly, and good communication and agreements (on IP plans, who has the admin PW, how to avoid multicast switches paralyzing your company network etc).
vMix is a very complete platform to combine alot of different input sources, do camera cutting, graphics, replay, streaming, recording, video over IP and so much more on one (1!) PC or Laptop.
